Why is addressing construction important?

In 2020, the Alliance conducted its first Hot Spot Assessment. The purpose of the Hot Spot Assessment was to prioritize member purchases and activities by impact, risk, stakeholder interest, influence, etc. to help focus efforts at the member and Alliance levels. The Hot Spot Team used Environmentally Extended Input Output (EEIO) data to review total spend and the relative carbon footprint of spend data.

The outcome of the Assessment revealed that construction services rose to the top in both the spend and emissions rankings. The top four categories were in construction services:

  1. electrical infrastructure construction services
  2. general construction services
  3. pipeline construction
  4. building construction services

Therefore, if the Alliance and Utility Members are looking to address the industry’s carbon footprint, the construction area would be a key leverage point.
